There’s no denying that Mickey is one of Walt Disney’s most beloved characters ever; however, Mickey wasn’t actually created for cartoons. Instead, he created a series of sound films that were designed to be shown in theaters before movies.

Mickey was first introduced on November 18, 1928, in a silent cartoon called “Steamboat Willie”. While he wasn’t technically named Mickey at that point, his personality and appearance were already there: He was energetic and funny, with big round ears and a distinctive voice.
How Did Walt Disney Create Mickey Mouse?
During one of his early business ventures in Kansas City, Walt Disney developed an interest in animation. After moving to Hollywood, he began producing silent cartoons featuring a character named Oswald Rabbit.

While on a train ride in New York City, Disney happened to see an animatronic mouse from a vaudeville act and was inspired to create his own mouse cartoon. Mickey Mouse made his debut with “Steamboat Willie” (1928) and remains Disney’s most iconic cartoon character.
