Mahatma Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar, India. His full name is Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He is commonly known as ‘Mahatma Gandhi’. Gandhi gave freedom to India with the weapon of non-violence. Which is a very difficult task.

That is why he is considered the father of India. Gandhi’s work inspires the movement for civil rights and liberty around the world.

His father Karamchand Gandhi was the chief minister of Porbandar, and his mother Putlibai Gandhi was a Jain who taught Gandhiji tolerance, non-violence and vegetarianism.

In May 1883, according to Indian tradition, He was married to 13-year-old Kasturba Makanji in his childhood.

He did his further studies from Samaldas College, Bombay University. when he was 18 years old, he started studying abroad at the University College of London in September 1888.

He returned to India after his studies. In 1893, he started working for an Indian company at Christmas, South Africa with a one-year contract.

These days the ‘apartheid’ system was very widespread in South Africa. Despite the expiration of his one-year contract, Gandhi remained in South Africa for the next 21 years for protesting against racial injustice.

One bad incident happened to him. Once when he was going by train, some people did not sit him in the train even if he had a ticket. After this, he decided to fight against this discrimination. He returned to India in 1916.

M. K. Gandhi upon returning from South Africa visited a small town Jetpur near his hometown in 1915. He was felicitated by the local community led by fellow barrister Devchand Parekh. Gandhi was referred to as Mahatma for the first time.

Here he developed the non-violent civil disobedience against the British. In 1918, The Britishers tortured many people in a village. He encouraged the villagers to organize a peaceful strike and protest. After this, his fame spread, and he became widely known as the ‘Mahatma’.

In 1921 he was leading the Indian National Congress. And start fighting for complete political independence from the British government. He also boycotted British goods and institutions.

He was arrested on March 10, 1922, on the charge of inciting civilians. The British government accused him of treason, and he was jailed for six years.

In 1928, he resumed his campaign for ‘Dominance Status’ for India. After realizing his political influence at the national level, the British authorities agreed to make various agreements with Gandhi. As a result, poverty was eradicated, untouchables were given status and women were given equal rights.

During the Second World War, Gandhi had started the ‘Quit India’ movement, but it had the worst cases of civil arson. As a result, he arrested on 9 August 1942 and kept under arrest for two years at Aga Khan Palace, Pune. His wife Kasturba Gandhi died 3 months before he was about to leave prison.

In August 1947, The British wanted to divide India into Muslim Pakistan and Hindu India. Gandhi strongly opposed this plan of the British. But the Congress Party accepted the partition proposals made by the British.

Partition was now the only way to avoid civil war in India, which Gandhi reluctantly accepted and India celebrated its Independence Day on 15 August 1947.

The partition agreement required Pakistan to make some payments. But Indian leaders feared that Pakistan would use the money to build an arsenal of war, so they decided not to give money to Pakistan.

But Gandhi supported the payment of resettlement to Pakistan for the lost territories mentioned in the partition agreement. The payment was made to Pakistan with Gandhi’s efforts. Many people were opposed to this matter. One of them was Nathuram Godse, Godse decide to kill him.

On 20 January, a gang of seven Hindu fundamentalists, including Nathuram Godse, entered the Birla House in Delhi. where Gandhiji was to be addressed. The gang entered the speaker’s podium and planted a bomb on the back wall of the podium.

There were plans to detonate the bomb during the speech, but the bomb exploded prematurely. Some members of the gang were arrested. while others, including Godse, Managed to escape.

After an unsuccessful attempt at Birla House, Nathuram Godse bought a pistol. On January 30, 1948, while Gandhi was attending a prayer meeting at Birla House in Delhi, Nathuram Godse took advantage of the crowd and shot Gandhi three times in the chest.

Gandhi’s last words were “Hai Ram”. But some witnesses claim that he did not say a word. Godse made no attempt to escape after the murder. Godse and his accomplice Narayan both were executed at Ambala Jail for Gandhi’s assassination.
