Christopher Reeve was a famous American actor who is best known for his superman character. He was born on September 25, 1952, in New York City. His full name is Christopher D’Olier Reeve.
His father Franklin D’Olier Reeve was a teacher, novelist, poet, & scholar and his mother Barbara Pitney Lamb was a journalist.
Christopher Reeve’s grandfather Colonel Richard Henry Reeve had been CEO of the American finance company Prudential Financial for 25 years.
Christopher’s parents got divorced in 1956, after that he went to live with his mother in Princeton, New Jersey.
Christopher Reeve’s Education & Career
Christopher Reeve found out at the age of 9 in 1962 that he was interested in acting.
And when he attended the Williamstown Theater Festival in Williamstown, Massachusetts in the summer at the age of 15, he decided that he would pursue a career in acting.
He got his early education from Princeton Day School in 1970. During that time Christopher also acted in a few plays in Boothbay, Maine.
After this, he moved to New York City to make a career in the theatre. There he took admission at Cornell University. Where he joined the theatre department and acted in many plays.
He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cornell University. After graduation, Christopher Reeve acted in many plays and films, but he got his real identity when he played the lead role in the film Superman.
He worked in 3 sequels of Superman. After that, he got a chance to work in many action films but he refused all.
After this, he worked in some successful films like The Bostonians, Street Smart, and The Remains of the Day.
Apart from films, Christopher also wrote the books “Still Me” and “Nothing is Impossible”. He has also received a BAFTA Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, an Emmy Award and Grammy Award for his outstanding acting.
Christopher Reeve’s Problems & Accident
Quite a few people would know that Christopher Reeve had asthma and allergies since childhood. And at the age of 16, he also developed alopecia areata, a hair loss disease. Along with that, he also had several serious infections.
Christopher had an accident on May 27, 1995. He fell during an equestrian competition, breaking a bone in his neck. Due to which he became paralyzed and he also needed a ventilator to breathe.
He remained in this condition till his last time. If there had been anyone other than him in this condition, he might have been very disappointed. But Christopher never loses hope. He turned himself into creative work even in this condition.
He directed the film “In the Gloaming” and also worked in the television remake of “Rear Window”. Apart from this, he worked for environmental and human rights as an activist.
Christopher Reeve also founded the Reeve-Irvine Research Center and the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation.
In the beginning of 2004, he was undergoing treatment for pressure ulcers, due to which he was diagnosed with sepsis.
On the night of October 9, 2004, when Christopher Reeve took an antibiotic for the infection, his blood flow was restricted, due to which he went into a coma.
After that, he was immediately admitted to the Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco, New York. And about 8 hours later, on October 10, 2004, he died at the age of 52.
His birthday was 15 days before his death. Christopher also said at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago on October 4, 2004, that this was his last public appearance. Maybe he knew that his death was near.
