Who Is APJ Abdul Kalam ?
Abdul Kalam’s full name is Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam. He was born in a Tamil Muslim family on 15 October 1931 in the Madras Presidency of Pamban Island, a pilgrimage site in Rameswaram.
His father’s name was Jainulabiddin Marakayar who was a sailor. and his mother’s name was Ashiamma Jainulabiddinwho was a housewife. Kalam had four brothers and a sister and the youngest among them all.
Abdul Kalam Earlier Life :

His ancestors were rich businessmen and owners of many properties. But over time his wealth declined and Kalam’s family became poor. Kalam’s childhood spread in poverty. Therefore, he had to sell newspapers at an early age.
In his school years, Kalam was not a smart student but he had a strong desire to learn something new. Apart from this, he had a great interest in mathematics. He completed his primary study at the Schwartz Higher Secondary School, Ramanathapuram.
For further studies, Kalam went to Saint Joseph’s College, Tiruchirapalli and graduated in Physics in 1954. Then in 1955, Kalam went to Madras Institute of Technology to study aerospace engineering.
Abdul Kalam Career :
Kalam wanted to become a fighter pilot but missed out on just one point from achieving his dream. Hence he started working as a scientist in Defense Research and Development Service (DRDS) in 1960. But he did not like this job.
Besides him, Kalam was a member of the INCOSPAR committee of a renowned space scientist Vikram Sarabhai. In 1969, Kalam was transferred to the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). where he worked as a director in India’s first Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-3) project.
In July 1980, he successfully deployed the Rohini satellite into the Earth’s orbit. Between 1970 and 1990, Kalam developed the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and SLV-III projects.
These projects proved to be successful. In the 1970s, Kalam also directed two projects, Project Devil and Project Valent. under which he was not approved by the Union Cabinet to develop a ballistic missile.
In 1983, he served as the Chief Executive of R Venkataraman’s program Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP). Under this program developed several intermediate-range ballistic missiles.
Abdul Kalam As a Prime Minister :

From July 1992 to December 1999 he worked as the Prime Minister, Secretary of Defense Research and Development Organization. During that time Pokharan-2 nuclear test was carried out. During this time, Kalam was made the country’s most famous nuclear scientist.
The Last Years of Kalam’s Life :
After leaving the post, Kalam became a visiting professor for the Indian Institute of Management. And worked as a professor of aerospace engineering at Anna University of the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology.
In May 2012, Kalam launched a program called What Can I Give for India’s youth against corruption.
Abdul Kalam Death :

On 27 July 2015, when Kalam traveled to Shillong to deliver a lecture on “Creating a Liveable Planet Earth”. His health deteriorated after only five minutes in his lecture. He was taken to a nearby Bethany hospital in critical condition. But doctors could not save him despite a lot of effort.
After his death, Kalam’s body was brought from Shillong to Guwahati in an Indian Air Force helicopter. On the morning of 29 July, Kalam’s body was taken to his hometown Rameswaram. On 30 July 2015, he was buried with full state honors at Pei Karambu Maidan in Rameswaram.
